step sideways and bumped into her. She turned toward him with a gasp of fright. He stared at Rich as though he'd seen a ghost. The sudden paleness of his skin scared her. His hand came out and clasped her shoulder as he steadied himself. She grasped his other hand. Ice cold. She held his fingers between her palms. "Chris? Christian? What is it?"
"Leave him alone," Rich snapped. "He's remembering now. Aren't you, McCall?" He took a step forward, his gaze focused on Chris's white face, as though he was enjoying the pain he saw there. "I knew you hadn't figured out the truth yet because no one came looking for me. After Colleen listened in on D.J.'s call to the captain I sent the boys to Outgamie to steal the picture and get rid of you both. As you both know, the incompetents didn't do the job. When they called and said they'd lost you near Isadora I knew where you'd gone and came up here myself. I couldn't take any chances with you two loose ends. There's no statute of limitations on murder, after all."
"You said the same thing last night," D.J. muttered. "What does the statute of limitations on murder have to do with starting gangs?"
Rich turned his gaze back to her, and D.J. flinched away from the hatred in his eyes. "I'm sick of your mouth, D.J. I've always been sick of it. It'll be a pleasure to get rid of you once and for all." He raised the gun and pointed the weapon at her head. "Close your eyes, little girl. Listen to the tiger's roar and dream of better things."
